So, it finally happened— you were able to install the best gate for your property. Everything about it is perfect; it has the right colour, shape, size and features. Your estate finally has all the protection you could ask for, and it brings the look of your property to life.
Isn’t there something missing, however? As great as a gate is on its own, it can be quite useless without a way to open it conveniently.
This is where gate openers come in. The coolest thing about this feature is that it can come in a variety of different types depending on how you want this security addition to work. Regardless of what type of opener you want to go with, our swing gate operators at Techno Gate GTA want to talk about them in detail so you can better determine what option is best for your situation.
What Is a Gate Opener?
Before we talk about finding the right gate opener, we believe it’s important to define what an electric gate opener is first. In simplest terms, a gate opener is the mechanical arm installed onto your swing/slide/tilt gate that helps it open and close. A signal is detected from whatever gate opener is utilized, and this signal will tell the arm to open or close the gate. If on the off chance the gate comes into contact with an obstacle, it will reverse backward to let said obstacle move. If you use a garage door opener or know about them, the function is basically the same
Swing Systems vs. Sliding Systems
The most common directions that a gate opens in are either outward in a swing-like style (kind of like opening a book), or outward in a sliding motion (often lining up with the other gates on your property). The way in which you want your gate to open will entirely depend on how much space you have, how much space you want left over and what style matches your preferences/property best.
When it comes down to it, a swing system will require a lot more space than a sliding gate system. This is because the gate will move in a motion that takes up more space on your property. This option tends to also be a little less secure, as less force is required to get it open in comparison to a sliding gate.
A sliding gate system, on the other hand, is much more secure and durable due to its build. It also requires less space to function properly and is great for properties that have any sort of slope before or after entering the estate (swing gates cannot work in these types of situations).
Common Gate Opener Options
Code Entry
If you want your property to be secure but convenient for guests/employees, code entry is one of the best methods to go with. We find that many commercial businesses and warehouse owners favour this option, as codes can be used by a large group of people whilst maintaining secrecy and privacy.
Proximity Entry
While coded gate openers offer security, proximity gate openers offer none. While it may get rid of concerns with other methods (such as losing cards/keys, needing batteries for a remote or having to remember a code), anyone with a car can drive up to this gate and be let in. This is because with this entry, all it takes is some pressure detection from the outside to let the gate open. This pressure plate/magnet installation to detect cars can be quite the hassle though, as the weight of other things may leave you locked out.
Remote Entry
One of the most common methods used to open a gate involves remote entry. Just like a garage door opener, when this remote is pressed, the device sends a signal to the gate to let it open. While this option is moderately secure, the chances of getting your remote stolen are still possible. Even so, these remotes can be found (and repaired) at practically any big hardware store, making it easy and convenient to get in if needed.
